Automating conformal coating for PCB electronics manufacturing

When applying a conformal coating to connectors, earth pads, and specific components like switches, attention to detail is critical as they should not be coated. They are normally masked off manually, which is a laborious process with high attention to detail required.

Circuitwise recently invested in a Protecto XP V4 Automated Conformal Coating System from Rehm Group. This technology greatly improves the reliability of the coating process by using high-performance nozzles and a fiducial camera that precisely deposits a homogeneous film layer only where required, avoiding the need for masking.

The conformal coating machine was paired with a UV inspection buffer, which examines the PCBs under ultraviolet light to ensure adequate coating thickness with no gaps and surface coverage in all the designated areas. The new line also included an inline drying machine to speed up the drying process under environmental control to ensure no quality issues arising from dust or moisture.
